Meet the Directors

John Duckworth

Managing Director, DipFD, MBIFD

Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to visit us. Our family has dedicated itself to caring for local families for many years, and we have always believed that this work is about people, not business. Being trusted at such a difficult time is a privilege we never take for granted. We are here to listen, support, and guide you with genuine compassion, kindness, and care.

Kayren House

Funeral Director / Manager

When a loved one dies, the practical arrangements can feel overwhelming. Our role is to ease that burden and provide a reassuring hand whenever it is needed. As a family firm, we treat every family as we would our own—with warmth, respect, and understanding. We are committed to creating a service that truly reflects the life being remembered.

Richard Scott

Funeral Director

Supporting families through grief is at the heart of everything we do. This is more than a job—it is a calling built on genuine care for people facing profound sadness. We are honoured to help create meaningful tributes and provide reassurance, guidance, and compassion when it is needed most.

Four Generations of Funeral Care

The Duckworth name has been synonymous with the highest standard of funeral care for four generations. Yesterday's traditions are integral to our service, whether it’s paging the cortège or the wearing of traditional funeral dress, we are proud to uphold the standards of generations passed whilst looking towards the future.

Proud to serve the North East

Our head office, private chapels of rest and unique memorial suite are situated on North Hylton Road, Sunderland, with additional branches at The Nook in South Shields and Anthony Road in Farringdon. Our reputation, exceptional service and attention to detail often means we also conduct funerals and serve families on a much wider geographical scale throughout the North East, including Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham, Teesside and surrounding areas.

With our in depth knowledge and experience, we often undertake and arrange repatriations to and from various countries and do so on a regular basis.

We are licensed members of the British Institute of Funeral Directors, a society only open to qualified Funeral Directors and also The Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF).

Thank you to everyone at John Duckworth Funeral Directors for making the funeral arrangements and the day itself go so smoothly. Everyone has been quite superb and incredibly professional and helpful."
